What are kidneys?

Kidneys perform crucial functions which affect all parts of the body. Many other organs in our body depend on th ekidneys in order to function as they should. Nomrally, there are two kidneys, one on either side of the spine under the lower ribs. They are pink in colour and shaped like kidney beans. Each kidney is about the size of your clenched fist.

Why are the kidneys important?

Your kidneys are the master chemists of the body.

· Kidneys regulate water

For your body to work properly, it must contain just the right amount of water. One of the important jobs of the kidneys is to remove excess water from the body or to retain water when the body needs more.

· Kidneys remove wastes and balance your body's chemicals

Many of the substances in the blood and body fluid must be kept at the correct level for the body to funcation. For example, sodium
